Different Types of Airbrush Paint

Airbrushes are a popular way to paint cars, models, t-shirts and more. There are several main types of airbrush paint, each with its benefits and drawbacks.
Acrylic paint
Acrylic, or water based paint, is a popular airbrush medium. Acrylic paints are very popular for textile applications, such as T-shirts and jackets. If an acrylic paint is used on a textile fabric, it usually also needs a fixing procedure to ensure the paint is waterproof. Almost any acrylic paint works in an airbrush, but it is best to use paint specifically for airbrushes. Most acrylic paint needs thinning. Water usually works, but special acrylic paint thinners also exist. Acrylic paints can end up opaque or transparent, depending on how much thinner is used.
Enamel paint
Enamel paints are popular for use on both full size cars and model cars. These paints are usually shinier and more durable than acrylic paints. However, since they are not water soluble, it is imperative to use a paint thinner for airbrushing and to clean the airbrush thoroughly with paint thinner after use. Enamel, or oil, paints take much longer to dry than enamel paints. This drying time can make projects with multiple coats take a long time to complete.
The two main types of paint used for airbrushing are acrylic, or water based, and enamel, or oil based paints. Both work well, though they are used for different purposes. Acrylic is favored for textile application, such as on t-shirts, while enamel is typically prefer by modelers and automotive painters.
