FAQs About Automotive Airbrush Paint

Airbrushes are used on automobiles to create unique paint jobs with designs like flames, tribal stripping, fade outs and more. Learning to airbrush requires mastery of a few basic techniques and years of practice.

Q: Is it possible to use your own design?
A: Yes, it is definitely possible. You can use your own design or purchase a premade design, but either way, you need a stencil from which to work. A stencil is a sheet of lightweight cardboard or poster-board with the intended design cut out of it. It protects the base coat of paint from the airbrush paint and gives the design smooth, even lines.
Q: In which order are the paints applied?
A: When painting an intricate design made of multiple colors, always complete work with the darkest colors first. Then, add layers of paint, working through each color from darkest to lightest. Allow each layer of paint to dry completely before adding the next layer.
Q: What kind of airgun is best for automotive paints?
A: Select a paint airgun with a siphon house. These are best for automotive airbrushing because they are attached to canisters that handle a large volume of paint. They are also relatively easy to clean.
Q: What is the best amount of paint to apply at any one time?
A: It is better to apply a very thin layer, and then reapply to get the coverage and color intensity that you want, than to apply a thick layer of paint all at once. Applying too much paint at a time, without giving it time to dry, can ruin the finish due to running paint. For best results, apply paint with a smooth back and forth motion.
